Educate the World?

I just had this thought last week about education. So much effort goes in to providing education around the world. People go in a set up schools in thrid world countries, and small villages where children can go to learn math and reading.

This seems like more of a western view on education. I think to be educated takes more than what you learn in school. A child in a small village in the jungle doesn't need to know how to read and do algebra, that won't help him survive. He needs to know when the rainy seasons are, how to navigate the rivers, how to survive. This is the education he needs. I don't think it is fair to impose our westernized views of education, it disrupts their culture.

Questions:

1.What are the benefits/negatives of making sure the entire world is educated?

2. Is it really harming the native culture when a new school is opened?

3. Is it possible to preserve culture and provide 'westernized' education?

4. Can you think of any examples of spreading western education?
