Three Steps to GREATNESS

Starting a paper or choosing how to begin an argument is one of the hardest things to do for me. I'm the non-confrontational type. Most teachers expect a "captivating" first sentence or something the "hooks" the audience. I just can't ever get it right. After reading Heinrich I have a better understanding on how to start my papers, but more importantly present and "win" an argument. Basically three steps are vital.
1. Virtue
2. Practical Wisdom
3. Selflessness or disinterest
Since these steps are based on the techniques of ethos.. How hard could practicing these steps be? I would much rather pull at someones values than their logic.

Let's say my dad got mad at me because I didn't do the dishes one day. This is how I would manipulate the conversation to get out of punishment.

Dad: Alana, why did you not do the dishes today like your mother asked? Your mother and I do not ask you to do a lot of things around the house. So as punishment give me your phone.
Me: Daddy (I'm a daddy's girl) I'm sorry! I have not gotten around to do them yet. I was really busy with homework and tonight I have dance practice. If you want my phone, that's fine. Here. BUT I hope I do not get into an accident while I'm driving to practice, or get a flat tire, or if practice runs later don't bother calling me, I won't have a phone.
Dad: You're right, you probably should have your phone for the car drive.
Me: Are you sure? I probably should lose my phone privileges and I promise I'll be a safe driver. Even thought you always tell me you worry about the "other" drivers.

This conversation is money. My interest is focused on the punishment by agreeing that I should lose my phone BUT by explaining the possibilities that could happen without it.. my dad realizes that taking my phone could be a bad decision.

I wish I would have known this in high school. I probably would have had my phone more times than not.

  1. You really are a daddy's girl if you can get away with this! If I ever tried anything like this with my parents, they would take it to be sarcastic, watch me do the dishes right then, AND take the phone. I think a lot of parents already know these argument things, so as they say..."Resistance is futile!"
