I definitely have heard various people talking about how water bottles hurt the environment. So I can't act COMPLETELY surprised after reading these articles. However, I actually am in awe. These articles made it crystal clear just HOW bad water bottles are for our environment. However my question is "then why in the WORLD do SO many people use them in the United States???"
I mean to be honest, I use water bottles ALL the time. It wasn't until I came to UT that I began using a nalgene water bottle. The only reason I did this was because once I started college my parents gave me a monthly allowance, and I realized a water bottle was a lot cheaper than plastic bottles. But in actuality, MOST people do not use water bottles. Growing up we had a refrigerator that had a water dispensor built into it. However after we re-did our kitchen, our interior decorator told us that this style was "out" so our new fridge doesn't have one of these. Because of this, my mom is ALWAYS buying ozarka water bottles. Our family alone has increased our consumption of water bottles. I feel as though they have become more popular as I have grown up.
Does anyone else agree?? I mean my feeling is, if this is so bad for our environment then the developing countries need to come together and DO SOMETHING about this issue. Our conusmption is only increasing, meaning the problem is only getting worse. Nothing is going to change unless consumers are forced to change their habits. Until reading these article I had no idea that some bottled water isn't safe. This is important information that needs to be sent out for all the public to hear. I know after reading these passages that I'm going to stay away from bottled water for a while. The public needs to know about these dangers. I'm sure if the information was revealed, people would AT LEAST think twice before they chugged another dasani bottle. This lack of communication is having serious effects on our world. If our habits are negatively affecting our world, people need to be told about it. And not just once, this information needs to be constantly reiterated so that people start taking it seriously.
"Many social justice activists believe that access to safe water should be declared a human right so that water cannot be sold for profit"
- -I agree with this comment. Water is essential for life. It should be considered a human right. I don't think it is fair for any corporation to have control or a monopoly over this resource.
"The Average American uses 90 gallons of water a day."
--This statistic disgusts me. As an American, I am embarrassed by this fact. This is a completely unreasonable amount. I feel that if I was ordered to decrease my water consumption I would. However people aren't overly cautious with how they use their water because our government doesn't make water usage seem like something we need to worry about. As a result of this, we take water for granted.
Water is a Human Right-
Reading about this organization makes me want to do my part to try and improve this condition in our world today. I wish the U.S. would become more involved with this international campaign to enshrine water as a human right.
My opinion is that where we spend our dollar truly does reflect the demands of our economy. As an individual I now want to change my behavior and make a new effort to not use water bottles as a way to consume water.
